Fenimore Quartet members commissioned the Elegy in tribute to Quartet member Ruth Berry’s father, Donald L. Berry. The inscription on the score reads:

This piece has been commissioned to honor the life of Donald L. Berry (1925-2013), a man whose love of Spirit, Education and Music was incomparable.
