3/14: Continuo Collective of the South

Continuo Collective of the South performs at the Covenant Concert Series

This musical portrait of the Bach Family Tree places the apples that fell from that tree into a basket and presents to you a variety of great baroque and early classical music.

The Continuo Collective of the South performs Baroque and early Classical solo and ensemble instrumental music; this concert of works composed by J.S. Bach and his sons will take you on an exploration of the High Baroque unaccompanied beauty of the solo flute and variety of intricately woven, counterpoint and continuo-driven Trio Sonata textures, into the simpler, broader clarity and architecture of the Classical stylistic period of music.

Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach (21 June 1732 – 26 January 1795), was the ninth son of Johann Sebastian Bach.

The 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica says of him "He was an industrious composer, … whose work reflects no discredit on the family name." He was an outstanding virtuoso of the keyboard.

A significant portion of J. C. F. Bach’s output was lost in the WWII destruction of the Staatliches Institut für Musikforschung in Berlin, where the scores had been on deposit since 1917.

The Continuo Collective of the South performs Baroque and early Classical solo and ensemble instrumental music; this musical offering of will take you on an exploration from the unaccompanied beauty of the solo flute and accompanied solo violin (J.S. Bach Partita in A Minor, Sonata in G minor) to the variety of intricately woven, counterpoint and continuo-driven Trio Sonata textures by J.S. Bach and his many sons (harpsichord and cello plus violin and flute).

The Continuo Collective of the South is an ensemble dedicated to the vast repertoire of Baroque and early Classical chamber music. The “continuo,” the harpsichord and ‘cello, is the consistent, driving force of the group as they cover all of the harmonies and reinforce the “voice” most fundamental to baroque accompaniment: the bass line. This core duo is always included in the Continuo Collective’s concerts and joined by a variety of instrumentalists or vocalists depending upon the repertoire being performed.

The founding members of the Continuo Collective of the South are the continuo of ‘cellist Ruth Berry and Ken Courtney on harpsichord; with soloists Angela Massey (flute) and Pawel Kozak (violin).
