Dec. 12 – Davidson Chorale & Lyra Vivace

Handel’s Messiah

with special guest vocal soloists:

  • Elizabeth Grant: soprano
  • Jessica Lane: mezzo-soprano
  • Jaeyoon Kim: tenor
  • Washington Isaac Holmes: bass

December 12, 2014, 7:30 pm

  • Aiken First Presbyterian Church, 224 Barnwell Ave NW, Aiken, SC, 29801
  • Admission is free, but donations are welcome

The Davidson Chorale, one of the most highly awarded high school choirs in the United States, will perform Handel’s glorious Messiah with the Lyra Vivace Chamber Orchestra and soloists. Many choirs sing this music, many instrumentalists play it, and many audience members hear it, but this performance is special. This concert is a unique opportunity for the talented students in the Davidson Chorale to rehearse and perform with professional instrumentalists and vocal soloists.

The Davidson Chorale will bring unprecedented artistry and preparation to this performance, partnering with the brilliant Lyra Vivace chamber orchestra for an unforgettable night of music. However, they also experience challenges that are typical of high school groups: namely, the annual decreasing budget shortfalls so typical of public schools. Alone, a performance which pairs such excellent high school musicians with accomplished professionals is out reach for most school budgets, but with your help, the Davidson Chorale will be able to fund this unique performance.

This live performance will be professionally recorded for DVD, which the Davison Chorale plans to distribute to their backers. Please take a moment to make a small contribution on Kickstarter. Your donation will go directly to the cost of recording and producing a DVD to benefit the Chorale and to provide stipends to the orchestra and vocal soloists. Kickstarter fundraising ends on December 8; if our modest goal of $4,000 is not met by December 8, all donations must be refunded. Please help.

10/18: The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace

by Karl Jenkins

Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace

Performed by the Augusta Choral Society and the Lyra Vivace Chamber Orchestra with a film made to accompany this specific piece of music.

Saturday, October 18, 2014, 7:30 pm

  • J. Porter Stokes, Artistic Director and Conductor
  • Tickets: $25/Adults and $10/Students and Active Duty Military, available online or by calling 706-826-4713
  • Sacred Heart Cultural Center, 301 Greene St, Augusta, GA 30901
  • Please click here for more information about Lyra Vivace

Karl Jenkins’ 21st adaption of the Roman mass form is both anti-war and social commentary. With sources of inspirations and texts borrowed from the Islamic call for prayer, the Mahabharata, Kipling, Tennyson, and Sanchiki Toge and other sources, Jenkins manages to present his message in a most compelling package of movements that range from powerful and dramatic to passionate and mellifluous. The result of this undertaking by the ACS will be one of the most intense and satisfying concerts in recent memory.

The international best selling CD album of this piece, conducted by Karl Jenkins and featuring The London Philharmonic Orchestra and The National Youth Choir of Great Britain, was released on 10 September 2001, the day before the tragic events in the United States.

3/29: Augusta Chorale Society with Lyra Vivace Brass and Percussion

“Pipes, Brass & Drums”

Saturday, March 29, 2014, 7:30 pm

Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, 605 Reynolds St., Augusta, GA 30901

Nothing goes together quite like a large chorus, a big organ, brass, drums, cymbals, timpani – combined with grand and great music in a beautifully acoustically designed space. March “roars in like a lion,” but the ACS will keep the tumult going with this fabulous concert featuring organ pipes, trumpets, horns, trombones, percussion – and the amazing Augusta Choral Society.
